The Hamas-run Health Ministry in Gaza has released a list of 6,747 individuals who were reportedly killed in Israel’s relentless bombardment of the Palestinian territory. This was seen as a response to President Biden’s doubts about the accuracy of the Palestinian death toll. The list includes the names, ages, genders, and ID numbers of each person killed, with 2,665 of them being children. The ministry also stated that an additional 281 people could not be identified, bringing the total to 7,028. The ministry did not explain why it decided to publish the names, but it came after President Biden expressed skepticism about the Palestinians’ reported death toll.
The release of this list has raised the possibility that the actual death toll could be even higher. The ministry excluded individuals who may still be buried under rubble, those considered missing, and those whose deaths were not recorded by hospitals. The ministry did not provide a reason for the publication of the names, but it followed President Biden’s remarks questioning the accuracy of the reported death toll.
Israel has questioned the credibility of the Health Ministry’s numbers, citing the ministry’s affiliation with Hamas, a group considered a terrorist organization by the United States. The United Nations and other organizations have relied on the ministry’s figures in the absence of independent verification. Human Rights Watch has stated that the ministry’s numbers are consistent with their own investigations of Israeli airstrikes on Gaza.
Critics argue that the focus should be on preventing further casualties rather than debating the accuracy of the death toll. The destruction in Gaza, as seen in photographs, videos, and satellite imagery, points to a high number of casualties. The violence has led to widespread devastation and families being decimated. Gaza residents report witnessing an increasing number of deaths. Mass graves have been created due to the lack of space in morgues, and bodies have been stored in ice cream trucks. The situation in Gaza is dire, and many families have lost multiple loved ones.
