Hamas Frees Israeli Hostages

Hamas released 11 Israeli hostages — all women and children taken from Kibbutz Nir Oz — on Monday, the fourth day of the cease-fire, according to the Israeli government. The hostages went missing on October 7th when they were taken from their homes, and were kept in Gaza by the militant group.

On Monday, two sets of siblings returned with their mothers to Israel, leaving their fathers believed to still be held in Gaza. The hostages held in Gaza have endured a traumatic period, a lot of suffering and pain.

Here’s what we know about the 11 Israeli citizens who were released on Monday:

  • Sharon Alony Cunio, 34, and her 3-year-old twins, Emma Cunio and Yuli Cunio
  • Karina Engelbert, 51; Mika Engel, 18; Yuval Engel, 11
  • Eitan Yahalomi, 12
  • Erez Kalderon, 12; Sahar Kalderon, 16
  • Or Yaakov, 16; Yagil Yaakov, 12

Some of the hostages have been released in earlier dates. The story of the Israeli hostages has drawn global attention, with their families pleading for their release in meetings with top political leaders around the world. These families have endured significant emotional hardship during the time these hostages were held in Gaza.
