The Grimes family had a fateful conversation with Sandpipers of Nevada coach Chris Barber. With Logan, Utah offering Christian the deputy fire chief job, they were considering moving from Las Vegas. Barber reassured the family that their daughter, Katie, could move anywhere and earn a college swimming scholarship. He went further to say that there was something different about Katie and that if she stayed in Nevada, she could become an Olympian. The Sandpipers CEO also reached out to make a pact with the family, promising to stay with the team until Katie graduated high school if they remained in Nevada. Katie now stands as one of the most promising young swimmers in the U.S. at 17 years old, making an impressive mark at the 2021 Olympics and World Aquatics Championships. She has already secured a spot in the 2024 Paris Olympics in the 10-kilometer race. Her unrelenting hunger fuels her rise to new heights, and her ability to overcome challenges, like contracting COVID-19 at the Short Course World Championships in Abu Dhabi, inspire her fellow teammates.
