Three US climbers were on Jannu’s north face, a large, sheer rock wall, with a 10,000-foot drop below them when Alan Rousseau mentioned that he felt they had accomplished something really cool. The next day, they reached the summit. It is considered the greatest climb ever by many in the climbing community. Jannu is a 25,295-foot peak that is one of the most formidable for climbers and has limited ascents. No one had climbed their route using traditional Alpine style, which does not include fixed ropes or supplemental oxygen. The climbers, who had to acclimate to the high altitude and cope with crevasses and unstable glacial ice, used the latest climbing gear in their ascent. They “made something personal,” they said.
